PROJECT OVERVIEW

THE IDEA: An app that promotes consistent healthy eating habits and provides, accurate, detailed, and personalized information on the nutritional content of food items.

THE PROBLEM: People face many obstacles when it comes to making disciplined healthy food choices, and a lot of it comes from a combination of a lack of knowledge and the right habits at the onset of their health journey.

BASED ON MY INTERVIEWS, THE COMMON THEMES OF STRUGGLE ARE: 

- Lack of knowledge about nutrition

- Food tracking is inherently tedious

- Dieting becomes tiring and cannot be followed forever

- There is a health goal but it seems unachievable

VALUE PROPOSITION

GAMIFICATiON AND A VIRTUAL PAL

I aim to alleviate these pain points by changing the approach of how users see the journey of attaining their health goals. Therefore removing the idea of following a strict regiment and bringing more focus towards cultivating healthy habits and disciplines that can be carried over in the long-term.

 

Users also require better incentivization towards consistently tracking their nutrition with good food so I intend to bring gamification to the app where the user has a "BiteBuddy" that they can level up, and get outfits for with the coins they accumulate from tracking the food that is more nutrient-rich and from meeting daily objectives and completing "Quests" which are their bigger, habit-building goals.

RESEARCH

HYPOTHESIS

I believe individuals with particular nutritional goals to lose weight struggle to reach that goal due to the lack of knowledge of in-depth nutritional values of the food they eat and also should avoid.

We will know this to be true when more than half of research participants reiterate the common struggle of reaching health goals due to the common root of lacking knowledge of the nutritional values.

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

I created this Information Architecture diagram to outline the layout of the multiple paths and the features of each section. This will act as a guide in creating and organizing my wireframe designs.

USER FLOWS

I created user flows for two key actions: adding a “Quest” (a nutritional plan with a specific goal) and adding a food item to be tracked. I focused on these tasks since they’re the core functions users will rely on most. The goal was to map out the simplest, most efficient paths for users to complete these actions successfully.

I then created sketches of screen layouts for each section that was highlighted in the Information Architecture diagram.

WIREFRAMES

I then moved on to creating digital wireframes for each main feature of the app. Here, the idea of a featuring a customizable animal avatar is more realized.

HIGH-FIDELITY PROTOTYPE

After the wireframes, I created a high-fidelity prototype of the app. The prototype highlights interactivity in the main features of the app such as adding a meal, a quest, and shopping for items for your Avatar.

IMPACT: The research exposes a need that the current market has not fully met and the design justifies the feasibility of creating a gamified nutrition app.

NEXT STEPS: Conduct a usability study to assess the success rate and user efficiency of each task.
